The longest chapter in Fermenting Revolution is about beer and health. My number one health tip for drinkers is: moderation. My number one health tip for immoderate drinkers is: water.
Now researchers are saying that beer is better than water for re-hydration.
Prof Manuel Garzon, of Granada University in Spain, tested water and beer on subjects who had engaged in strenuous activity under conditions of extreme heat. The results, he says, show that a moderate amount of beer (one pint) was better than actual water at helping the exercisers retain water.
Apparently, the reasons have to do with beer’s carbonation and nutritional content. Carbonation helps deliver the goods more quickly to the system, and the carbohydrates (see, it’s right there in the name!) help replace lost calories. Read the whole story in the Telegraph right here.
But be warned, as my advice above indicates, alcohol in large doses has the opposite effect – it’s a diuretic, which means it dehydrates the system, and that’s why immoderate drinkers should pound glasses of water as they pound glasses of intoxicants.
