Chris Erickson, director of brewing at Snake River in Jackson Hole, WY, emailed the other day alerting me to their “Organic Beer #1,” or OB-1 for short. He says they just passed their annual organic certification, making this their third year brewing this organic English Style Brown Ale. The fact that Chris won the illustrious Brewmaster of the Year award at the 2000 Great American Beer Festival should silence any remaining organic beer naysayers.
I visited the Snake River brewpub and brewery about ten years back for a wedding. I enjoyed a wheat beer they had on at the time so much that we grabbed a growler full of it and headed for some hot springs to enjoy the outdoors in style – I’ve always found that sitting in hot springs tends to kindle a thirst.
Here’s a video of Chris demystifying the brewing process.
Beer isn’t the only thing Chris brews. He also been brewing biodiesel for his VW TDI (the TDI part indicates VW’s diesel engine models) for the past five years or so, commenting that “I’ve met lots of brewers doing the same as the skills are so directly transferable.” That’s so true. I met Mike Altman and his crew from Iron Springs at the Craft Brewers Conference this past April – they arrived at the gig in their Ambrewlance!
