First LEED Certified Brewery?

Yesterday, Jason at Brewery Vivant emailed me asking if I knew of any LEED certified breweries. I was stumped. So I checked the LEED Project Directory. In the project name field, I typed in the search word “brew” in order to account for projects that might have the word brewery or brewing in them, and clicked sort.

The resulting list included what seemed to be entirely projects in the redevelopment of what were once brewing neighborhoods. The only project that looked like a active brewery was Brewery Vivant itself.

So, does anyone know of any LEED certified breweries?

  1. I read about a brewery in development in Chicago that is in a building that is or going to be self-contained in energy, water etc. I’m sorry I don’t remember more, but if you search out a blog by girlslikebeertoo in Chicago you’ll find the post.

    Was it Revolution Brewing?

We’re in the process of building one right now….in addition to being LEED cert, it also occupies a building on the National Historic Registry….meaning we are recycling a building instead of building a new one….details at

This is the closest to the perfect brewery. They are unlikely to be LEED certified but they aim to be a zero-waste brewery and the beer is great.

Yeah, Black Star Co-op Pub and Brewery is LEED Gold certified. We’re also Gold ROC, America’s first co-operative brewpub, and worker self-managed!

Ninkasi Brewing is on pace to get LEED Certified for their new production facility, I think the first to do so.

  7. I think that the Teaching and Research Brewery at the University of California, Davis takes that honor. See:

This was completed and certified LEED Platinum in Dec 2010.
